Summer Socks

I was looking for a quick and easy project to fill in between bigger projects and socks are always first up in my mind.

I didn’t need another pair of long wintery wooly socks but instead I decided I need to add to my summer sock collection.

I have this skein of yarn that my sister dyed and gifted to me last year. It’s such happy colours and who doesn’t want happy feet?

In an effort to make the socks, and therefore my feet, even more happy, I decided to do the heel and toe in a brilliant yellow. The ball band was lost many eons ago and I’ve been using it to make “flower” pompoms.

It was just sitting on my desk as I cast on my socks and I made the decision to add it in. There is a bright yellow that appears in the variegated so it seems like a natural fit.

Summer Socks

With Main Colour, cast on 60 Sts.

Ribbing:

Row 1: Knit all stitches.

Row 2: K1, p1 to the end of the round.

Repeat these 2 rows for as long as you would like the cuff, ending with a row 1. I wanted a short cuff (about 1″), so I ended on row 13.

Switch to contrast yarn and knit across 30 stitches.

Heel Flap:

Row 1: *S1, p1* repeat between * * to the end of the row.

Row 2: S1, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat for 30 rows in total.

Dutch Heel:

Set Up: S1, p19, p2t, turn.

Row 1: S1, k10, ssk, turn.

Row 2: S1, p10, p2t, turn.

Repeat rows 1 & 2 until 12 stitches are left, ending with Row 1. In the final row, change to Main Colour Yarn.

Gusset:

Pick up 16+1 stitches along left side, knit across 30 stitches that were holding, pick up 1+16 stitches along right side and end the row in the centre of the heel. This is the beginning/ending of the rows.

Row 1: Knit to 3 stitches before the front 30 stitches, k2t, k1. knit 30 stitches. K1, ssk, knit to centre heel.

Row 2: Knit all stitches.

Repeat these 2 rows until 30 stitches remain from the Gusset decreases.

Foot:

Knit all stitches until 2″ from end of toe. For me, that is 7″ from the edge of the heel (where the contrast colour meets the Main Colour) on the bottom of the foot.

Toe: Switch to Contrast Colour Yarn.

Row 1: k1, ssk, knit to 3 before end, k2t, k1. Repeat on second needle.

Row 2: Knit all stitches.

Repeat these 2 rows until 12 stitches remain on each needle.

Graft the toe and sew in all the ends.

Slip all stitches purl-wise.

I used about 45 grams of the variegated yarn.

  1. Ah, thank you for the wonderful sock patterns. I do desperately need to knit some shorty summer socks and seeing these reminded me. Love the yarn!
